3.14 Electromechanical Infusion Pumps

Red Cells and Platelet Concentrates (cellular components):

  • Approved infusion pump devices may be used to transfuse cellular blood components, if the manufacturer can provide evidence no damage to the cells function occurs. Healthcare providers/facilities should ensure this is confirmed in writing, prior to the introduction of any new electromechanical device to support transfusion.

Plasma Components:

  • Approved infusion pumps can be used.

White Blood Cells (Granulocytes/Buffy Coats)

  • Infusion pumps cannot be used in any circumstance. Pumping causes irreversible damage to the cells. Gravity infusion only.

Intravenous Immunoglobulins:

  • Approved infusion pumps are recommended to enable safe and correct titration schedules to occur.

Coagulation Factors:

  • The use of syringe infusion pumps can be useful to ensure the correct rate of administration is maintained.
