Amazing Story

Long-time donor Liz tells her story

Pippy and Liz
I started giving blood years ago when donors went to the Masterton Hospital. I had been at school with the woman in charge of the unit, and she suggested one day that I could consider being a blood donor. A friend whom I worked with was a donor, and she spoke positively of her experiences. So I decided that this was something I could do, and I have just been going along ever since. The year I started? Well it must be at least 30 years ago, and I am sure the NZBS has that record.

Back then an alcoholic drink was offered after the donation! But that was soon phased out, and it was the tea, coffee, juice and biscuits that we get now. The best part was the cheese and marmite on a plain cracker!

The beauty of living in a small town such as Masterton, is that there is bound to be someone else donating blood at the same time, so it is a good time for a gossip and catchup!

Later on the blood service was centralised, and came from Wellington. The centre moved to the Masterton Town Hall, closed at present as an earthquake risk. And now the blood donation centre is at the Senior Citizens Hall in Cole Street.

I believe my blood donations are used for neonatals. So what better use for my blood!
The NZBS personnel, in Wellington are superb. Always well organised, professional and friendly. I must say that I have always felt appreciated for the donation I had given.

I reached a goal earlier this year when I gave my 50th donation. This milestone was acknowledged with a certificate and a very nice gift of a backpack. Some years ago we were at the Wellington Blood Centre where a friend was giving his 150th donation! The staff celebrated this achievement in style, and he was presented with a very nice picture.

My husband has had cancer, and during his treatment we stayed at Margaret Stewart House for some weeks. During this time I was able to give blood, as the Blood Service Rooms are just over the road.

I am very pleased that I have good health, and am able to give blood to help others. I am now over 70, but will just keep on donating until such time as I am not able.
