Amazing Story
Former donor Rachel is now on the receiving end
I was a regular blood donor for years until recently. I had had major surgery and had to stand down from giving blood. When I was once again eligible to donate I went along but my haemoglobin was below the normal rate. This was unusual for me however I thought nothing of it at the time. A few months later I went to try and give blood again and my haemoglobin was still too low. I felt fine and was fit and healthy but thought I'd get a set of blood tests done via my doctor. As a result of this I was diagnosed with myeloma...a form of blood cancer.
I consider myself lucky. I am in the early stages of this disease and going to try and give blood made made me aware of it. If I hadn't been a donor I may not have noticed I had the cancer and have developed a lot of nasty symptoms that occur as the disease progresses.
