New Zealand Blood Service Advises Blood Stock Levels Are Healthy

New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) confirms its blood stock levels are healthy following the tragic events in Christchurch.

“We appreciate all who contacted us in light of the tragic events last Friday”, says Chief Executive Officer Sam Cliffe.

“We can confirm that there is no urgent need for blood. Our blood stocks were healthy going into Friday enabling us to ensure blood was available to those who needed it.

“To all our existing donors, thank you all for your generosity and continuous support”.

NZBS has extensive monitoring processes in place to ensure blood is available for those who need it. Following Friday’s unprecedented tragedy, the service was able to quickly move blood stock from around the country to ensure the blood bank in Christchurch hospital was able to meet demand.

The need for blood year round is constant, as blood only lasts for 35 days and the Blood Service encourages anyone who is considering becoming a donor to sign up and join their donor registry.

The organisation would like to reiterate that there is no urgent need for blood, however donors are always welcome by booking an appointment through the app, website or 0800 448 325. If you are currently not a donor and wish to join the donor registry click here.
