It's the season of giving
Kiwis have summer sussed, it’s all about relaxing and our essentials are pretty simple - a comfy possi, feet up, a relaxing drink and a bite to eat… But this summer you don’t need to be at the bach to enjoy all these things, because New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) regularly offers its donors the best seat in the house, followed by a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit to those who help save lives over the holiday period (well actually, at any time of the year).
NZBS is reminding Kiwis to consider adding giving the gift of life to their Christmas wish-list this festive season by donating blood. As while the rest of us wind down and start enjoying our holiday, the need for donated blood doesn’t go away.
For two weeks over Christmas and New Year, the Service has 40% less collection days than any normal fortnight through the rest of the year, but the same demand for blood and therefore donors remains .
While many of us struggle to get the timing right for the festive feast on December 25th, Christmas logistics are a particularly tricky balancing act for NZBS. Exactly the right number of donors need todonate the right blood product at the right time, and at the right place.
Blood and blood products have a very specific shelf life, with platelets holding a life-span of just five days, and red blood cells up to 35 days. It’s pretty clear why NZBS needs to continue collecting through Christmas and January!
Over the festive period, blood won’t just be needed for holiday accidents; regular demand for day-to-day users remains, such as for cancer patients, and new mothers and babies.
NZBS encourages regular and first-time donors to make an appointment to donate blood over the summer period. Appointments help the Service immensely with planning and allow donors to schedule some time in their diaries during their busy break.
