Blood Banks
NZBS manages the Blood Banks in six of New Zealand’s largest hospitals between them responsible for the major proportion of the country’s pretransfusion testing.
The international transfusion literature have shown that labelling errors and misidentification associated with pretransfusion samples significantly increases the risk of transfusion errors, particularly transfusion of incompatible or ‘wrong’ blood.
To assist those collecting sample, NZBS has produced a 'Sample Collection Manual' which provides important information regarding the sample requirements for Blood Bank and Reference Laboratory tests.
