Blood Component Use

Whole Blood can be processed into the following components:

  • Fresh frozen plasma - used to treat patients who have bleeding problems
  • Platelets - for control of haemorrhage, often in patients with leukaemia
  • Cryoprecipitate - contains blood clotting substitutes for seriously ill patients
  • White cells - occasionally used for patients who are not producing their own white cells
  • Red blood cells - used for the treatment of anaemia and bleeding after trauma and surgery
  • Frozen red cells - used for long term storage of rare blood groups
  • Filtered red cells - for patients who have antibodies against white cells.

The following products are processed for the NZBS by fractionation at CSL Bioplasma in Australia from plasma donated by New Zealand donors:

  • Normal Immunoglobin - for temporary protection against Measles, Rubella and Hepatitis A
  • Specific Immunoglobins - for treatment of Tetanus or to prevent Hepatitis B, or Chickenpox
  • Albumex® - 20 - 20% Albumin solution is used for patients with kidney disease, liver disease and burns
  • Albumex® - 4 - 4% Albumin solution is used for the treatment of shock, in emergencies and in kidney failure
  • Biostate® - Factor VIII - is used for the management of the inherited bleeding condition Haemophilia A
  • MonoFix® - VF - Factor IX - used to treat Haemophilia B (Christmas disease)
  • Prothrombinex™ - HT - contains concentrated clotting factors and can be used for the treatment of Haemophilia B (Christmas disease)
  • Intragam® - P - is used to boost the immune system, such as following a bone marrow transplant and for immune deficiency disorders
  • Anti - D - prevents Rh disease in the newborn. Rh disease is an incompatibility of the mother's and baby's blood resulting in the mother developing antibodies against the baby's blood
  • Thrombotrol® - VF - used for the management of an inherited condition where a patients blood clots too readily.
